Fear

Women fear differently than men in public due to experiences, sounds, and different social spaces (Geog 423). Different aspects such as lighting on the streets, number of people on the streets, clean or dirty streets, or simply who you are with plays a role in the level of fear. Men also fear, especially in locations that they are not familiar with. In the graphic novel Persepolis, war counts as a fear factor, as soldiers capture people that do not abide by the rules. Marjane and her family lives in constant fear. Women fear men because of the physical advantage that men have. Space, according to Valentine, also plays a role in a woman’s level of fear. In a familiar environment, fear is often lower than in a litter, rat infested area with graffiti and low lit streets (Valentine). Geographically, people tend to fear when they are new to an area, whether they moved there or are just visiting because they are unfamiliar to the area. Fear will alleviate once they understand the area or when they know when to avoid certain places that may be dangerous at times.
